You may think that now autumn’s here you’re over the worst of pest infestations in and around your home. Well you’d be wrong.
Like humans, many pests look for a warm, dry home in the cooler months. Here’s a list of three common pests to look out for around your home in autumn.
Rodents
Rats and mice like to make a warm, dry nest in your home during colder months, and a perfect hiding place for them is often in ceiling or wall cavities. Detecting rodents can be as easy as finding droppings in your home or garage, or you may hear or see them when they become active at night.
A major concern to you and your family is if a rat or mouse chews through an electrical cable; yes, it will kill the rodent, but the wire can still be live, and that could potentially start a fire.
Termites
Unlike many other pests, termites don’t hibernate in cooler weather, and are active all year round. Their love of timber means that termites can cause serious damage to your home; potentially destroying foundations and internal walls.
Termite nests can be easy to see, as they make nests which look like mud and are often near skirting boards. If a termite infestation goes undetected, treatment and subsequent repairs can be incredibly expensive.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches will usually live in your kitchen, where food and water are easily accessible. Because they breed in winter, what could have started as a small problem can quickly turn into a major one.
If you think you may have a problem with cockroaches, look for them near your sink, near your waste bin, and at the back of cupboards.
If you see signs of any of these pests in your home, the best solution is to have them removed by a professional.
