Termites, spiders, cockroaches... we've all had one pest or another taking up residence in our home at some point. But what if your unwanted visitors are bees? Attempting to remove a beehive yourself, without the help of a professional, can result in severe injury or worse, so we've put together a list of top tips which should help to discourage bees from selecting your home as their next hive.
1. Repair any holes
Did you know that bees can enter any structure that contains a hole as small as a quarter of an inch? So it is important to seal any potential entry points with durable materials such as caulk. Blocking any holes is a good way to ensure that a swarm cannot gain entry to your property.
2. Tidy away garden equipment and tools
Leaving loose garden tools lying around could potentially attract a swarm on the lookout for a new hive location. Outdoor clutter, such as furniture, can provide sufficient shelter for a hive to thrive.
3. Remove any traces of honeycomb
If you've had a problem with bees before then be sure to remove any traces of honeycomb from your property as the pheromone scent can attract other bees.
4. Report swarms immediately
If you notice bees swarming then report the activity to professionals before they begin to nest. Swarming occurs when a queen bee leaves an overpopulated nest with a group of worker bees to set up a new colony.
5. Use a deterrent
Using mothballs around an area that could attract bees, such as a garden shed, can help to deter them from settling there. However, be careful not to use too much as it can be fatal and we need bees as they're an essential part of our eco-system.
Hopefully, these tips will help you to avoid the need to call in pest control, but if you do find yourself with a hive of unwanted visitors then always contact an apiarist first.
