Unfortunately, it can be less ‘the bees’ knees’ and more ‘the bees’ eaves’ when bees and wasps decide to make your home theirs. Are you seeing an unusual number of insects indoors or clustering around a particular gutter or overhang? You may well have a nest and this can pose a hazard to your family and pets if you accidentally stumble across one whilst having a clear out. It is not uncommon to find a nest in roof spaces, wall voids, eaves, bird boxes, sheds and garages during the summer. The European wasp is also an increasing problem due to a lack of predators and warmer conditions. Attracted to food and drink, having an untreated wasp nest in your home or garden can become a serious issue.
Signs of a nest
A mature European wasp nest can include thousands of wasps, so if you do have a nest, you will probably see them swarming around the area it’s located. You can also leave some sugary food out and watch where wasps and bees return to. A wasp nest is a papery sphere, whilst bees make a wax ball that can reach the size of a football. You may hear buzzing inside the house if they have swarmed in a loft or cavity. As European wasps are aggressive and can sting repeatedly, you are advised to not approach the nest and instead call a professional pest control service to remove it.
Nest removal
Once a nest has been located, the treatment route will depend on the species of wasp or bee. We will be able to assess the situation and determine the best solution from a range of pesticide options. If it is a bee nest it may be removed and relocated, depending on the area it is located in. You should not attempt to move or spray a nest yourself.
The best thing to do if you suspect that you have a bee or wasp problem is to call in the professionals. A1 Professional Pest Control can meet your Canberra pest control needs, treating a wide range of problem creatures.
