Melissophobia, also known as apiphobia, is the surprisingly common fear of bees. Although people fear the sting of this tiny creature, it is important to understand the critical part bees play in the future of our society.
Bees keep our flora thriving
Bees have played an essential role in society for millions of years. As well as making the widely loved spread, honey, they are also responsible for keeping a significant amount of flora thriving. These misunderstood insects pollinate over 80% of the world's flowering plants, including 70 of the top 100 food crops required by humans. This includes a variety of fruit, vegetables and nuts.
The first instinct of many people when they see a bee is usually to kill it with the nearest object to avoid being stung, but what people don’t realise is that a bee will only sting a person if they feel threatened. Stinging someone is a bee's last form of defence, this is because once a bee uses its stinger it causes them to die.
Protecting bees from extinction
Already endangered, if bees were to become extinct, our society would not only lose our beautiful flowers, we would lose all plants pollinated by bees, affecting all forms of agriculture. Not only would we lose honey, which has many health benefits and has even been proven to have the potential to prevent cancer, but we would also lose most of our food sources, disrupting the entire food chain and all of civilisation. Not only are natural foods such as fruit, vegetables and nuts critical to a human’s diet, but they are also critical to the diet of many species of animals. As wild as it may sound, if bees become extinct, it would only be a matter of time before all of civilisation as we know it comes to an end.
We need bees as they play one of the most important roles in our society and work harder than any other species alive today.
Do not kill bees
If you have a problem with bees, please do not kill them, call the Beekeepers Association of ACT before contacting pest control to have bees safely removed by an apiarist (http://actbeekeepers.asn.au).
We love bees and will not treat them until all other options have been exhausted!
