We've all heard of termites, those nasty little wood-eating critters that can damage or even destroy your home. It can be difficult to spot termites themselves, they are small - similar in size to ants, and they tend to be secretive. So you are more likely to notice signs of their presence or the damage they are doing to your home than see the little critters themselves. Here are some signs to look out for:
1. Hollow sounding timber
Tapping your hand or knuckles against the timbers in your house should produce a solid sound. If your wood sounds hollow or papery, it's possible you have a termite problem.
2. Tunnels
Termites create tunnels from mud to keep themselves protected as they devour wood. It may be difficult to see signs of this in your house, but if you notice mud tunnels in the area around your house, it's a good indication of termite activity in the area and it's best to have it checked professionally.
3. Flying termites or discarded wings
Flying termites means that both males and females are leaving their parent colony to create a new nest. If you see termites flying around your home, it's possible they are planning to move in. Both males and females discard their wings when they have found a mate, so if you find a pile of discarded wings on your property, it's likely you have uninvited guests.
4. Hard to open doors or windows
Although damp conditions can make timber swell, making it difficult to open doors and windows, this can also be caused by termite activity. As termites work, eating timber, they produce mud-like excreta which draws and holds moisture causing swelling. This can cause stiff doors and windows in your home.
5. Clicking sounds in the walls
Termites communicate with their colony by bumping their heads against timber and shaking their bodies. If your walls are talking to you with soft clicking sounds, it's possible you have termites.
Termites are a serious pest problem as they can cause severe damage to your home. If you notice any signs of termite activity in or around your home, it's time to call in the experts at A1 Professional Pest Control.
