While they are small and seemingly harmless, ants can be a real nuisance. It only takes one scouting ant to find a food source and they will send word to the rest of the colony and come back in huge numbers. That's why the best way to stop ants is prevention rather than active extermination. So, to help you prevent an ant infestation, here are five tips to ant-proof your home.
Locate and seal all entry points
Ants are masters of breaking and entering and will take advantage of any crack or gap to enter your home. To prevent an ant invasion, make sure you seal up any obvious cracks using caulk or expanding foam. Common entry points include gaps around sinks, taps and basins, as well as gaps beneath skirting boards.
Don't leave food out
While it can be tempting to leave those freshly baked cookies on the counter for everyone to enjoy, if you leave them out for too long, ants will see this as an invitation. Put all food away as soon as you're finished eating and make sure you tidy up any crumbs or spillages after every meal.
Seal all food in containers
Ants love pantries as they contain lots of food (most of which isn't sealed properly). To prevent this, invest in airtight containers to store cereal, pet food, dried fruits and any other open or loose goods.
Empty your bins regularly
The more perishable foods you have in your bin, the more likely you are to see ants. Try to empty your bins a few times a week to discourage ants from entering your home.
Drain your sink
Ants not only seek food scraps, but also water. If you leave water standing in the sink you may wake up to a whole bunch of ants having a drink (particularly in the summer months).
