Ants! They may be the least unpleasant of the pest world, but they can certainly be the most irritating, especially if you have pets. That little line of ants seen marching toward a sticky honey bottle are easy enough to deal with using the wipe of a cloth and a wash of the bottle, but when you leave food out for your pets it’s like a 24 hour all-you-can-eat buffet for the whole colony. So, how do you minimise the side of ants with your pet’s dinner? Here are a few pointers.
The moat
Ants are not the most adept swimmers, so using a “moat” system can help keep them out of your pet’s bowl. Simply fill a larger container with water and place the pet food bowl inside the larger one to create a defensive moat.
Spick and span
If you don’t leave biscuits out for your pets each day, washing the bowls between each feed will help remove the smell of food and though it won’t totally prevent ants, keeping the space around the bowls clean and scrap-free will help deter them.
Slip and slide
Ants are impressive burglars - they can make their way up walls, into food containers and even between jar lids - but even they can’t power through Vaseline or a similar viscous gel. Slap some of that around the edges of the bowl to create a barrier, but just make sure it is not harmful to your pets at all!
All out war
Though the above options may work temporarily, they do not fix the core problem, which is that you are dealing with an ant infestation. Regular and thorough pest control will help ensure the ants are marching one by one to some other pet’s food bowl, leaving your pet zone clear of moats, Vaseline and ants. Keep cleaning the bowls though, that’s important!
